Outrage Over Airbnb’s “Gladiator Experience” in Rome’s Colosseum

Exclusive Gladiators Return to the Colosseum in an Unusual Airbnb Experience

Airbnb has recently announced an unique opportunity to experience gladiatorial combat at the Colosseum in Rome. Dubbed “Train for Gladiator II Glory”, this one-of-a-kind event is part of an advertising campaign for the film “Gladiator II”. Starting in May, Airbnb will invite 16 participants to immerse themselves in the thrill of ancient gladiator battles within the legendary Roman landmark.

Booking Experience and Event Details

Participants will be guided through a thrilling adventure, first donning Roman-inspired armor, then witnessing seasoned gladiators engaging in a live battle before attempting their own fight under the watchful eye of a “patron”. This unique event promises an adrenaline-fueled experience within the Colosseum’s ancient walls, but some officials in Italy have raised concerns regarding the treatment of the monument as a “theme park”.

Rome Mayor Expresses Concerns

Enzo Foschi, Rome’s Secretary for the Democratic Party, commented on the situation, “We are not in Disneyland, we are in Rome. Every now and then someone seems to forget it.” Italy’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party has, however, defended the initiative, arguing that the events would bring “profitability” to the site and contribute to “education and scientific exploration”.

Concerns About Over-Tourism

As a growing number of tourists descend upon Europe’s cultural treasures, sites like Pompeii, Rome, and Venice are feeling the strain. Measures to control attendance at iconic destinations, such as Pompeii’s recent decision to restrict daily visitors, have become necessary to maintain the preservation and integrity of these historic sites.

The Importance of Preservation

Airbnb claims to have worked with the Colosseum Archaeological Park’s team to “sensitively recreate history”, recreating the excitement of ancient gladiator fights. In an effort to strike a balance between attracting tourists and protecting the sites’ integrity, cultural officials aim to introduce fee-based access systems, limiting visitor numbers at peak periods.

Unique Airbnb Experience

Airbnb has long been known for offering exceptional travel experiences. With its unique “Gladiator Experience” at the Colosseum, the platform has taken gladiatorial combat to the next level, immersing visitors in the authentic thrill of ancient Rome’s legendary fighting pits.
