New Rules in Town: ATHENS, AL Revamps Short-Term Rental Regulations
City council went ahead and passed a new ordinance last week, requiring short-term rental property owners to pay a business license fee and lodging tax. This new rule also applies to vacation homes in the city, which were previously unregulated.
What’s Behind the Move?
Athens city planner Erin Tidwell explained that the main goal is to boost the city’s revenue. As Airbnb continues to grow in popularity, now seems like the perfect time to introduce these new guidelines. Plus, it’s the right time to ensure everyone is following the same rules.
What’s Covered Under the New Ordinance?
The new regulations define what exactly the city considers a short-term rental and set rules for what can be rented out. For instance, an entire house or apartment must be rented out. You can’t just rent out your room.
More Convenience for Hotel and Motel Owners?
Tidwell emphasized that this new ordinance is also aimed at increasing fairness for hotel and motel owners, who already pay license fees and lodging tax. It’s all about maintaining a level playing field for all lodging providers.
Other Cities Taking a Cue?
Huntsville and Florence are already ahead with similar regulations, and Decatur officials are working on their own. With cities across the US following suit, it’s time for Athens, AL to do the same. Stay tuned for the latest updates!
