A Couple’s Journey to Becoming Airbnb’s 2 Billionth Customer
When going on vacation, many people find themselves staying in hotel rooms, but one alternative is renting homes through Airbnb. The company recently celebrated a milestone, reaching its 2 billionth customer. Tim and Theresa Lewis, a married couple living near Eagle River, Wisconsin, say their journey with Airbnb began five years ago with a trip to The Villages in Florida.
A Family Affair
Over the last few years, the Lewises have taken around 20 vacations, including a 51-day trip to Australia about a year ago. “As we traveled from the southern part of the country up the east coast to the far north, we stayed in about 11 Airbnb homes during our time in Australia,” said Lewis.
A Surprise in the Making
Not long ago, they took a trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, and received an interesting surprise. “A few days later, I got an email out of the blue from Airbnb’s communications team, saying, ‘Hey, we think you may have been our 2 billionth customer. We’d be interested in having a conversation with you,'” said Lewis.
Initially, Tim thought it sounded too good to be true and didn’t believe the email at first. But after further investigation, he decided to take a chance. “They just asked a bunch of questions about our stays; no personal questions. And then they mentioned they were going to send a $5,000 coupon for being the 2 billionth customer,” said Lewis.
A Double Surprise!
But the story didn’t end there. The Lewises later learned that the host they stayed with was also considered the 2 billionth customer, but they hadn’t responded. “And then the team said, ‘Oh, by the way, we were going to give her a $5,000 coupon, so we’re just going to give it to you instead.’ So, we ended up with $10,000 in coupons to use—and we definitely will,” said Lewis.
Planning Future Adventures
Now, the Lewises are already planning future trips to Norway, Africa, and beyond. They’re excited to explore new destinations and create more unforgettable memories with their family. Who knows where their next adventure will take them?
